Luis Suarez was born in Salto, Uruguay, and he is the fourth child of seven siblings. Suarez moved with his family to Montevideo when he was seven and his parents separated when he was nine years old. Luis Suarez lived with his mother and brothers, but they still maintain contact with his father in Montevideo, Suarez developed the skills of soccer in the streets.

When Suarez was 11 years old, he was invited to a youth camp training of the national soccer team, but Suarez should reject the offer because he could not afford football boots. His brother Paolo Suarez is also a professional football player who plays for Isidro Metapan in El Salvador.

In 2009, Suarez is married to his childhood girlfriend, Sofia Balbi, and they had their first daughter is Delfina, on August 5, 2010. When Suarez was in South Africa for the World Cup, Suarez became involved in charity work that supported solidarity.
